THINKING IN PROTOTYPES
An important step in the creation and innovation of new products consist in many designer ideas that at the end are represented in physical objects in 3D called Prototypes.
First you have to get a set of ideas for solving the problem or, in other case, to discover what you want or what you’re going to create. Prototypes are quite important because with that process you can find some mistakes early and with the experience you can fix them. Moreover with prototypes we are able to adapt or adequate the product to the costumers’ wishes, that’s possible with a set of pilot runs applied to prototypes.
Other step that is still important in the process is “Trial and Error”. It is really important because, as everybody knows, it is almost impossible avoid mistakes, but with trial and error you can find them early and often. Moreover, with trial and error, we can get some experience trying different ways to do the things and find out what works and stop doing what doesn’t works. Mistakes are inevitable, but if we try enough things we are going to find the best way to create or design the product. It’s for this that pilot runs exist.
Talking about Prototypes and Cad, the article says that the proliferation of design models has actually changed how Cad software is used. Rapid prototyping is much better than 2D screen rendering because is not enough. Moreover Rapid prototyping has become a form of dialogue between designers and their creation. Prototypes become an exactly copy of what the designer wants. But we have to be careful because prototype sometimes is not exactly what the designer wants.
